Important Update: Idaho Swimming Pool Rules Discontinued as of July 1, 2025
Effective July 1, 2025, the Idaho Swimming Pool Rules will be discontinued and no longer applicable throughout the state. As a result, Public Health – Idaho North Central District will no longer conduct inspections of public swimming pools in our jurisdiction. However, Environmental Health Specialists at Public Health remain available to provide technical assistance and educational support to pool operators upon request.
Resources to Help Maintain Safe Pools
Although the rules are no longer enforced, ensuring the health and safety of swimmers remains essential. There are several ways pool operators and staff can stay informed and qualified:
Training for these certifications is available through the Pool & Hot Tub Alliance. Additionally, Public Health – Idaho North Central District offers a self-paced online course designed to provide foundational knowledge for safe pool operation. After completing the course materials, you may schedule an appointment with an Environmental Health Specialist to take the exam.
Best Practices Still Matter
While the Idaho regulations are no longer in effect, pool safety should continue to be a top priority. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has developed the Model Aquatic Health Code (MAHC), a science-based resource offering best practices to reduce the risk of illness and injury in aquatic settings.
We encourage all pool operators and managers to consult the MAHC and stay up to date with current health recommendations to keep their facilities safe and welcoming.
